KatFS Pre-Alpha v0.1.1 is out!


Kalia and the Fire Staff Pre-Alpha v0.1.1 is now available! You can check the changelog in this previous devlog post, but the short version is that you can now rebind keys for keyboard and mouse, there's an optional alternative mode for dodging, and the UI saw a facelift. Oh, and the game was tuned to be ever so slightly more challenging now.

This is the perfect time to talk about what's slated for the next update, since that's where the interesting stuff should begin to get introduced. The current priority is to rework the AI of all the non-boss mobs (zombies, skeletons and slimes). While coding the boss, I realized that my generic approach to AI would become a hindrance, and that it would be best to have specialized scripts for every mob archetype instead. The boss launched with this new AI system, but the old mobs have yet to be ported over to it. With this new system, I should be able to make mobs of different types behave in more unique ways, such as skeletons attempting to encircle the player instead of just rushing them.

Besides the AI rework, there's also plenty of room for more prop variety and count. In KatFS you should never feel that you're lacking in flammable things to set fire to (unless you already burnt everything), and thus levels should be a bit more populated with items to destroy. I also hope to improve the amount of detail on the level itself, Kalia is venturing through an ancient city full of lore after all!

And finally, expect more general improvements to the level design, game mechanics, and bug fixes as I figure things out. But for now, enjoy version 0.1.1, and remember that your feedback is important in shaping this game into the best it can be!
