KatFS 0.2.2 - Expanded Controller Support


Hello everyone! It's update day for Kalia and the Fire Staff. Version 0.2.2 brings expanded controller support to the demo, as you probably have just seen in the title. But what does that mean?

For one, you'll no longer need to navigate all the way to the control settings menu and back in order to switch controller types! The game should now automatically detect input from a compatible device and switch to the appropriate control scheme at any point. Controller ran out of battery? Just switch instantly back to your keyboard and mouse (or any other compatible device) and continue playing!

Obviously such a change also had to arrive with an expansion to the array of supported devices. Here I'll present a list of all sorts of devices that should be supported, but this list comes with a footnote - I have only been able to personally test and confirm auto-detection and proper functionality for the Dualshock 4 controller. Therefore, if you find any issues with controller support, please report them to me, either in the comments to this devlog or to my social media. With that out of the way, the updated device support list:

  • Keyboard and Mouse - default control scheme for the game, thoroughly tested at this point;
  • Dualshock 4 - thoroughly tested at this point;
  • Dualshock 5 - not tested, but might work via backwards compatibility to DS4 support;
  • XBox 360/ One/ Series S/X - not tested, but bespoke support is implemented for these controller types;
  • Switch Pro - not tested, but bespoke support is implemented for this controller type;
  • Switch JoyCon - not tested, but might work via compatibility to Switch Pro support;

I hope that, with this additional controller support, that players will be able to enjoy KatFS the way they want. Not only that, but this is also an early planted seed for potential console ports in the future! One can dream, right?

There are still three more control schemes that are on the planning board for KatFS but didn't make it into 0.2.2 yet. The first being a generic gamepad control scheme to be used when the player connects a gamepad that does not fall into any of the currently supported devices. The second being bespoke Steam Deck support (having KatFS run natively on a Steam Deck has been a personal goal of mine since the device was first released). The third being a potential control scheme for mobile devices (a future mobile version is unlikely, but not completely off the table yet).
